National Museum of Erbil

Forum Erbil

Warm weather – islamic architecture

These might be the first aspects one might associate when thinking of Erbil. Nevertheless, beneath the surface Erbil provides even more interesting aspects which I consider highly interesting and worth researching. During my visits in Erbil I witnessed the high potential architecture of the Middle East mixed with modern, westernstyle architecture. With regards to the design, a town like Erbil requires to meet specific and highly sophisticated standards. Two of the most important aspects which had to be dealt with were the climatic conditions, namely the weather and the sun. My approach intends to master these challenges without damaging the architectural function and the design.

In the following work I want to depict the process in which the daylight – sun – enters the building, in this case a museum, without making the rooms uncomfortable. At the same time, my model denies the access of the light to specific areas in the building which do not require daylight. Those rooms are illuminated artificially.
The primary focus of this work is the interaction between natural light and artificially light.

Urban planning:
The next focus is to connect the people from outside the city with the old and historical part of the city with the citadel in the middle of Erbil.
